Kendrick Lamar’s surprise album GNX, released on November 22, 2024, marks a pivotal moment in his career, concluding a year defined by intense rivalries and significant achievements.

Following a dramatic feud with Drake, which many believe Lamar won, the album serves as both a reflection of his personal journey and a bold statement of his dominance in hip-hop.

With 12 tracks that delve into themes of respect, rivalry, and self-reflection, GNX features pointed references and sharp disses aimed at both Drake and Lil Wayne.

This release not only showcases Lamar’s lyrical prowess but also addresses controversies surrounding his recent accolades, including headlining the Super Bowl halftime show.

Addressing the Drake Feud

In the opening track, wacced out murals,” Lamar directly addresses his feud with Drake. He references Snoop Dogg sharing Drake’s diss track Taylor Made Freestyle on Instagram, rapping:

“Snoop posted ‘Taylor Made,’ I prayed it was the edibles / I couldn’t believe it, it was only right for me to let it go.”

This line highlights the tension between the two artists and Lamar’s incredulity over the situation.

The Lil Wayne Controversy

Lamar also comments on his selection to headline the Super Bowl over New Orleans native Lil Wayne. In the same track, he reflects on his admiration for Wayne’s Tha Carter III:

“I used to bump ‘Tha Carter 3,’ I held my Rollie chain proud / Irony, I think my hard work let Lil Wayne down.”

This lyric acknowledges Wayne’s legacy while addressing the controversy surrounding his own headlining choice.

The “Heart Pt. 6” Connection

Another significant track is heart pt. 6,” which continues Lamar’s introspective series.

The title echoes Drake’s diss track The Heart Part 6,” released earlier this year. By using a similar title, Lamar dismisses Drake’s narrative while focusing on his own journey.

GNX showcases Kendrick Lamar’s lyrical skill and strategic engagement with rivalries in hip-hop. Through sharp references and disses, he asserts his position in a competitive landscape while reflecting on personal growth and industry dynamics.
