Apple is reportedly addressing one of the most glaring issues with its base iPhone models—the lack of a high refresh rate display.

According to a new report from an insider in Apple’s supply chain, the iPhone 17 base variant is expected to come with a higher refresh rate, possibly 90Hz.

This would be a significant upgrade over the iPhone 16, which still features a 60Hz refresh rate on its base and Plus models.

In 2024, a 60Hz display feels outdated, especially at Apple’s premium price points. The rumored display improvement would bring smoother scrolling and an overall better user experience, something Apple fans have been demanding for years.

    A Shift in Strategy

The report humorously describes Apple’s approach as “squeezing the toothpaste,” a Chinese phrase implying minimal effort in product upgrades.

While the iPhone 16 introduced features like a camera control button and the incomplete Apple Intelligence, many users felt these updates were underwhelming.

    What’s Changing in 2025?

Higher Refresh Rate: Even a modest jump to 90Hz would be a major step forward, making the base iPhone 17 far more competitive.

iPhone 17 Air: Apple is reportedly replacing the Plus variant with a new, slimmer model called the iPhone 17 Air. This aesthetic-focused device is rumored to have lower specs but a higher price, targeting users prioritizing design over performance.

    A Long-Overdue Upgrade

If these rumors hold true, the iPhone 17 base model could finally offer a display befitting its premium status.

While critics might call this another case of Apple marketing incremental changes as major innovations, the higher refresh rate would undoubtedly enhance the user experience.

With these updates, the iPhone 17 series could become one of the most compelling options in 2025. It’s reminiscent of Apple’s delayed adoption of USB-C—better late than never.
