Fans of Industry may be surprised to see that Robert Spearing does not appear in Season 4. The character, played by Harry Lawtey, is missing from the season’s opening episode, and HBO’s creators have now explained why.

The most direct reason is scheduling conflicts. Lawtey has been busy with several film and television projects, including Mr. Burton, Words of War, and upcoming productions such as The Billion Dollar Spy and Under Salt Marsh.

Robert’s absence also fits the story. At the end of Season 3, he leaves both investment banking and the UK. He accepts that his relationship with Yasmin will not work and chooses a new life running a psychedelics startup overseas.

Show co‑creator Mickey Down said Robert’s storyline had reached a natural conclusion. He explained that the show now focuses on characters who are still struggling with unresolved trauma.

Down said characters who begin to heal or find closure often leave the world of the show. Robert’s final episode in Season 3 gave him a kind of redemption, which made his exit feel complete rather than abrupt.

While Robert is gone, Industry Season 4 introduces several new characters. These include Charlie Heaton as journalist Jim Dyker and Max Minghella as Whitney Halberstram, the founder of a powerful payments company.

Other new cast members include Kiernan Shipka, Toheeb Jimoh, Amy James‑Kelly, and Kal Penn, bringing new perspectives and conflicts into the story.

Although Robert Spearing will be missed by fans, the creators say his departure reflects the show’s evolving themes. Industry Season 4 shifts its focus forward, exploring how ambition, power, and unresolved pain continue to shape those who remain.
