Halide Mark III Showcases New Features, HDR Photos, and Early Access

Lux Optics has unveiled its plans for Halide Mark III, the next major update to its popular iPhone photography app.

Following the success of its Kino video app, which was named Apple’s iPhone App of the Year for 2024, Lux is adopting a more open development approach. The company plans to involve its user base through early access and feedback sessions via a dedicated Discord server.

Halide Mark III is set to introduce three key features: Color Grades, HDR photos, and a redesigned interface. The new Color Grades feature will let users apply aesthetic looks and color palettes, similar to Kino’s grading tools.

It will include options inspired by Lux’s own designs, classic film stocks, and user-created presets. Meanwhile, the app’s HDR photo capabilities will leverage iOS 18’s Adaptive HDR feature, enhancing HDR image compatibility across devices and platforms.

The redesigned interface remains under wraps, but Lux cofounder Ben Sandofsky hinted that it will prioritize functionality.

If the implementation of Instant Grade in Halide Mark III is as seamless as expected, grade-picking could become a central aspect of the app’s user experience.

While no specific release date or pricing details have been confirmed, Halide Mark III is slated for a 2025 launch.

Lux has indicated that existing Halide Mark II users will receive the upgrade at no extra cost, while users of the original version will have an upgrade path.

With its innovative features and community-driven development, Halide Mark III is shaping up to be a significant evolution in mobile photography.
