The long-awaited Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Nextgen Edition has finally been released, and fans of the classic game can now download and play it for free.
The best part? You no longer need the original GTA: Vice City to enjoy this enhanced version. The Nextgen Edition brings all the missions, content, and the full map of the original game to the RAGE Engine, improving the overall experience.
The city and weapons are updated from the Definitive Edition, and all the cars and character models are based on the Xbox version of the original game. While the character models’ polygon count hasn’t been increased, they now feature improved textures for better visuals.
Fans will also appreciate that all the original radio stations are included, along with cut-scenes that retain the original style. However, the Nextgen Edition also adds better particle effects and lighting improvements to give the game a fresh feel.
What started as a mod has now become a standalone project, available for download without the need for the original game.
The modding team behind the project initially planned to respect the publisher by requiring the original game, but after Take-Two Interactive deleted their YouTube channel without warning, they decided to release the Nextgen Edition as a free, autonomous download.
The team shared their frustration, saying, “Initially, the modification was planned to require the original game in order to show respect to the publisher. However, over the past two days, we have completely rebuilt the project, and it is now available as a standalone ‘installation-ready package.’”
