Google TV Budget Slashed as Company Prioritizes AI and YouTube

Google has cut its Google TV and Android TV budget by 10 percent, reducing funding by tens of millions of dollars. The move reflects the company’s shift in priorities toward other initiatives.

    Major Budget Reduction

According to The Information, the budget cuts could impact up to a quarter of Google’s smart TV teams, which previously numbered around 300 workers. The reduction represents a significant pullback from Google’s smart TV efforts.

However, Google is expanding these teams in other regions, particularly in India. The company plans to rebuild to similar headcount levels but with different geographic distribution.

    Google Remains Committed

Despite the cuts, Google says it’s not abandoning Google TV or Android TV entirely. A company spokesperson told The Information:

“We continue to invest in Google TV with new user experiences including the upcoming integration of Gemini. There are more than 270 million Android TV devices, and we remain committed to growing this ecosystem with an exciting road map ahead.”

The statement notably highlights Gemini integration, reflecting Google’s current AI priorities.

    Part of Broader Workforce Changes

The Google TV cuts align with Google’s recent pattern of trimming workforces in some divisions while expanding AI efforts. In April, Google laid off hundreds of workers in its platforms and devices division.

The company has been visibly prioritizing Gemini development, increasing budgets for AI initiatives while reducing spending elsewhere.

    YouTube Continues Strong Performance

While Google TV faces cuts, YouTube remains a major revenue driver. For the 12-month period ending last September, YouTube’s advertising and subscription revenue exceeded $50 billion for the first time.

YouTube is capitalizing on this success with new leadership moves. The platform hired former Disney executive Justin Connolly for a partnerships role.

    Leadership Changes at YouTube

Sources indicate YouTube is seeking a successor to chief business officer Mary Ellen Coe. YouTube VP of product management for connected TV Christian Oestlien is reportedly a contender for the position.

YouTube declined to comment on the leadership speculation.

    Strategic Shift Implications

The budget cuts suggest Google is reassessing its smart TV strategy despite having 270 million Android TV devices in use. The company appears to be consolidating resources while maintaining its ecosystem.

The focus on YouTube’s continued growth and Gemini integration indicates where Google sees its strongest opportunities in the entertainment and AI spaces.
