Google has shared new details about the expected battery lifespan for Pixel phones in a recent support article.

Starting with the Pixel 8a, users can now check their phone’s “Cycle count” in the Settings app under “About phone” > “Battery information,” which also includes the “Manufacture date” and “Date of first use.”

A charge cycle is defined as a full discharge and recharge of the battery, including partial discharges. For example, using your Pixel from 100% to 50% and then recharging it back to 100% counts as 0.5 cycles.

According to Google, Pixel batteries are designed to retain at least 80% of their original capacity after a certain number of charge cycles:

    • Pixel 3 and later models, including the Fold, should retain 80% capacity for about 800 charge cycles.
    • Pixel 8a and later models are expected to retain 80% capacity for about 1000 charge cycles.

For comparison, Apple’s iPhone batteries are designed to retain 80% capacity after 500 charge cycles for iPhone 14 models and earlier, and 1000 charge cycles for iPhone 15 models.

Google recommends charging your Pixel phone in a cool place (around 25℃ or 78℉) using a compatible USB-C PD or PPS charger, and avoiding use while charging.

Other tips to extend battery life include keeping your phone in a cool environment, using Adaptive Charging, and avoiding prolonged exposure to high temperatures.

If your phone reaches its cycle limit or shows a decrease in runtime, Google advises replacing the battery.
