Google Authenticator Update Enhances 2FA Security for 100 Million Users

Google’s latest update to its Authenticator app, version 7, is now available for download, adding several improvements aimed at making two-factor authentication (2FA) even safer.

With over 100 million downloads, Google Authenticator is already one of the most popular 2FA apps.

The major update introduces a fresh Material 3 design, but more importantly, it adds a privacy screen feature.

This allows users to set up a PIN or biometric verification before accessing their 2FA codes, enhancing security, especially if someone else tries to access the app. Users can choose to set this lockout for 10 seconds, 60 seconds, or 10 minutes.

Despite the new features, the app’s core functionality remains solid, with a search option replacing the traditional scrolling method to find accounts.

The app’s simplicity and reliable security features make it a top choice for many, even though it still lacks macOS compatibility, leaving Apple users with fewer cross-device options.
