Nintendo is offering free upgrades for select Nintendo Switch games when played on the new Switch 2.
This means if you already own certain Switch 1 games, you can enjoy better performance or new features on Switch 2 without paying extra.
While some games like Mario Kart World or Breath of the Wild require a paid upgrade to access enhanced versions, a few popular titles are getting updates completely free.
These upgrades are not as big as the paid versions, but they still improve gameplay and may add new support features like GameShare.
Nintendo says, “Free updates to improve playability on the Nintendo Switch 2 system will be released for select Nintendo Switch games.”
The updates will be available once your Switch 2 is connected to the internet. However, Nintendo has not shared exactly what each update will include.
Here are the games confirmed to receive free upgrades on Switch 2:
- Super Mario Odyssey
- Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury
- New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe
- The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening
- The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom
- Pokémon Scarlet
- Pokémon Violet
- ARMS
- Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Classics
- Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker
- Game Builder Garage
- Big Brain Academy: Brain vs. Brain
If you already own any of these titles, you’ll be able to download the upgrade for free when you get your Switch 2. Just connect to the internet, and the update should be available.
This move helps make the Switch 2 launch a little easier on your wallet, especially after high prices on some upgraded games caused frustration for fans.
