Fox Ends ‘Rescue HI-Surf’ Drama Series After One Season

Fox has decided not to renew the freshman drama series ‘Rescue HI-Surf’ for a second season. The Hawaiian lifeguard series, produced by John Wells, has gained a loyal fanbase, but it will not continue after its first season.

Despite strong support from fans and a promising premiere, the show struggled to gain significant viewership after its initial airings.

The series debuted with 4.7 million viewers, boosted by its post-Super Bowl slot, but the ratings eventually declined, and the show wrapped up with 1.4 million viewers for its season finale. Although it performed well on streaming platforms like Hulu, it wasn’t enough to secure a renewal.

Fox had high hopes for Rescue HI-Surf, giving it an early seven-episode order and scheduling the special Sunday premiere after a football double-header. However, a rare switch of its Super Bowl lead-out program in November and a lack of big stars in the cast may have contributed to its downfall.

The show, which filmed in Hawaii and fit into Fox’s budget model, was considered one of the network’s more expensive dramas. Despite this, it did not manage to break out like other Fox shows, such as ‘Doc’, which earned an early renewal.

For fans, the season finale did not end on a major cliffhanger, and the series creator, Matt Kester, had confirmed that the character Will (Adam Demos) was expected to return had the show been renewed.
