Flagship Phones May Soon Get 200MP Cameras with Ultra-Large Sensors

Smartphone camera technology is advancing rapidly, with brands competing to deliver the best imaging experience. A new development reveals that a top smartphone maker is testing a dual 200MP camera setup for its upcoming flagship powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 2 chip.

This prototype features a 200MP main camera with an ultra-large sensor around 1/1.1 inch, promising better low-light photos, improved dynamic range, and clearer images. Alongside it, there is a prototype with a 50MP periscope telephoto lens using a large 1/1.3-inch sensor. This setup supports high zoom levels and detailed close-up shots with telephoto macro photography.

Two camera configurations are under consideration: one with three cameras including two 200MP sensors (main and periscope telephoto) plus a 50MP ultra-wide lens, and another with a 200MP main sensor, a 50MP periscope telephoto, and a 50MP ultra-wide camera.

The main 200MP sensor is reportedly made by Sony, which would mark its first 200MP CMOS sensor and possibly the largest 200MP sensor on the market, nearly reaching a 1-inch size — a major milestone for smartphone photography.

Though the exact brand testing this system is not confirmed, rumors suggest Xiaomi, Vivo, or OPPO. The industry eagerly awaits which company will launch this powerful camera system first.

This new sensor technology highlights how smartphone makers continue to push the boundaries to offer next-generation photography and keep the race for the best mobile camera alive.
