Can Max Verstappen Still Win the 2025 Formula 1 World Championship?

Max Verstappen Breaks F1 Record With Fastest Monza Win Ever

Yes, Max Verstappen can still win the 2025 Formula 1 World Championship, but the challenge is steep. The Red Bull driver remains mathematically in contention despite a significant points gap after the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

Current Standings

  • Oscar Piastri: 324 points
  • Lando Norris: 299 points
  • Max Verstappen: 255 points

Verstappen trails Piastri by 69 points and Norris by 44 points. With only eight race weekends left, he must close this gap quickly.

Remaining Opportunities

There are eight Grands Prix and several Sprint races still to come. A driver can earn up to 25 points for a race win plus extra for the fastest lap, with sprints offering additional points. Experts estimate that as many as 389 points could still be won if a driver claims every possible victory and bonus.

What Verstappen Needs

To take the title, Verstappen must win most, if not all, of the remaining races and sprints. He also needs Piastri and Norris to score far fewer points. This would likely require multiple low finishes or retirements from the McLaren drivers.

Expert Views

McLaren’s leadership admits Verstappen remains a serious threat, citing Red Bull’s recent pace improvements. Analysts compare his task to famous comebacks, such as Kimi Räikkönen’s 2007 title charge, but agree it would require an extraordinary run of form.

Championship Outlook

Verstappen’s path to the championship is narrow but open. A near-perfect finish to the season, combined with misfortune for McLaren, is his only realistic route to a fourth title.
