Bluesky Video Apps Are Taking Off—Will One of Them Be the Next TikTok?

With TikTok’s potential U.S. ban looming, developers are rushing to create decentralized video platforms that could serve as alternatives—especially for users invested in Bluesky and its AT Protocol.

Bluesky is gaining attention as a decentralized social media platform that allows users to control their data and move freely between servers.

Now, several projects are working on video-first experiences, aiming to become the “TikTok for Bluesky.”

    The Top Contenders

    One – Bluescreen

    • Developed by Sebastian Vogelsang, creator of the Bluesky client Skeets
    • Functions as a video-first filter for Bluesky
    • Allows video uploads, with TikTok-style interaction buttons (likes, comments, saves)
    • Built quickly by reusing Skeets’ code

    Two – Reelo

    • A standalone video app on the AT Protocol, not just a Bluesky layer
    • Features: longer videos (three minutes), special effects, music library, and future livestreaming
    • Expected launch date: March 20, 2025

    Three – Skylight

    • Backed by investors like Mark Cuban
    • Built as a layer on Bluesky, limiting video length to sixty seconds
    • Already in beta testing on iOS and Android

    Four – Videos for Bluesky

    • Developed by Japanese indie developer Hoshida Takiyoshi
    • Offers a TikTok-like vertical scrolling experience
    • Features user profiles, trending feeds, custom timelines, and AI-based recommendations
    • Currently iOS-only, with potential for Android development

    Five – Flipboard’s Surf

    • Originally an aggregator for open web content
    • Now features a Bluesky video feed
    • Private beta with a signup list available

What’s Next for Bluesky Video Apps?

The rise of decentralized video apps shows how Bluesky and the AT Protocol could reshape social media. However, many projects face technical challenges, funding hurdles, and competition.

As TikTok’s fate remains uncertain, these apps could be the next major players in short-form video content.
