Audi has successfully completed the first shakedown of its debut Formula 1 car, the R26, at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya on Friday, January 9. This marks a historic moment as Audi officially takes over the Sauber entry ahead of sweeping regulation changes in 2026.

Veteran driver Nico Hülkenberg and rookie Gabriel Bortoleto shared driving duties during the test. Hülkenberg praised the team’s “fantastic effort,” noting the car’s initial balance and systems performance.

Under FIA filming day rules, Audi was limited to 200km of running on special Pirelli demonstration tires. The primary objective was to check systems and validate the brand-new power unit developed in Neuburg, Germany.

The R26 features a V6 turbo hybrid engine delivering a 50/50 power split between combustion and electric boost, producing around 400kW from each source. The car is 100mm narrower and 30kg lighter under new regulations, with a compact design, push-rod front suspension, and a distinctive engine note.

The shakedown used a blacked-out livery to conceal aerodynamic details. Audi will reveal its official colors on January 20 in Berlin. Other teams, including Ferrari with its SF-26, will follow with launches later this month ahead of pre-season testing in Bahrain and the season opener in Australia on March 6.
