Apple Vision Pro Faces Tough Competition from New Micro-OLED Headsets

Apple’s Vision Pro has been praised for its high-resolution display, offering 3,386 pixels per inch (ppi), but two new mixed reality headsets have just raised the bar.

These headsets feature 3840 x 2552 pixel micro-OLED displays, reaching an impressive 3,882 ppi. Although the difference in pixel count may not be noticeable to most users, it marks a significant leap in technology.

The two headsets, from companies Play For Dream and Megane, are relatively unknown names in the market, but they’ve made waves by beating Apple’s flagship device in display specs. Interestingly, Samsung is rumored to use similar displays in its upcoming Project Moohan, a direct competitor to the Vision Pro.

Samsung’s Project Moohan is part of a joint project involving Google and Qualcomm, aiming to create the first serious rival to Apple’s Vision Pro. With its superior display, the headset is expected to challenge Apple’s dominance in the mixed reality space.

However, the new headsets and Samsung’s device are not expected to be widely available anytime soon. They will likely first launch as developer versions, with the consumer product arriving later.

Pricing for these new headsets is expected to be high, similar to Apple’s Vision Pro. The Play For Dream headset is priced around $2,000, while the MeganeX Superlight 8K headset costs about $1,900. With Samsung’s headset likely to be priced even higher, these devices are expected to target high-end users.

While the higher resolution is an exciting development, it remains to be seen how these headsets will perform in the market. Apple’s Vision Pro has faced production delays due to unsold stock, and it’s unclear if the new competitors will experience similar challenges.

For now, the mixed reality market is heating up with serious contenders emerging from unexpected companies.
