Alpine Hits 2026 F1 Weight Target Early Ahead of Barcelona Launch

Alpine has reached a key milestone with its 2026 Formula 1 car, the A526, hitting the FIA’s minimum weight target of 768kg ahead of schedule. The early success gives the Enstone-based team an advantage as it prepares for pre-season testing.

The new 2026 regulations require a 30kg reduction from last year’s cars. Teams have called the weight target one of the toughest challenges in recent F1 history. Alpine’s rivals are reportedly still working to meet the rules, giving the A526 a potential head start.

The car’s weight savings are especially important this season. With shorter and narrower cars and a 50/50 split between the internal combustion engine and battery, Alpine can now optimize ballast placement to improve tire wear and mechanical grip.

The A526 also marks a major technical shift for Alpine. The team has ended its long-running Renault engine program and now uses Mercedes power units and gearboxes. This change could boost performance and reliability for the upcoming season.

Drivers Pierre Gasly and rookie Franco Colapinto will pilot the car. Colapinto earned his full-time seat after impressive performances as a reserve driver, pairing with the experienced Gasly to guide Alpine back up the grid.

The team has a busy schedule before the season starts: a private filming day at Barcelona on January 22, the official car launch on January 23, and pre-season testing in Bahrain in late February.

After a difficult 2025, Alpine’s early technical achievements offer hope for a stronger midfield presence. The combination of weight efficiency and Mercedes power could be crucial in helping the team compete against top rivals.
