YouTube Becomes the New TV Hub for Millennials and Gen Z

For years, YouTube has been trying to prove it is the future of entertainment. The platform’s main message to advertisers has been simple: young people no longer watch traditional cable TV; they watch YouTube. While this idea is easy to understand, YouTube has faced challenges convincing advertisers.

In the past, many YouTube videos were seen as low quality. Some popular creators even caused controversies, making advertisers cautious about investing heavily. To improve, YouTube started investing in original shows and working with well-known creators. It launched programs with higher-quality content, hiring Hollywood talent and funding scripted series.

One success story is Alan Chikin Chow, who created “Alan’s Universe,” a sitcom-style show made for YouTube viewers. His show draws millions of fans by telling stories similar to classic teen sitcoms but in a style that fits YouTube’s younger audience. Another creator, Dhar Mann, produces uplifting scripted videos that reach millions of viewers and address real-life challenges like bullying.

YouTube has also changed how people watch by making its service easier to use on TVs. Today, more people watch YouTube on their television sets than on phones or computers in the U.S. The platform now accounts for a significant share of TV viewing, even surpassing some traditional TV networks in popularity.

Although Hollywood executives still see YouTube as a less serious entertainment option, the platform’s growing audience and revenue tell a different story. YouTube ad sales have more than doubled in five years, now outpacing all four major broadcast networks combined.

As YouTube creators continue to produce longer, scripted shows that attract large audiences, the line between YouTube and traditional TV is blurring. With growing investment and new tools like AI to help creators, YouTube’s original shows may soon rival Hollywood productions—just on a different scale and budget.

YouTube’s rise as a major entertainment platform is clear: it is no longer just a place for random clips but a new home for quality, original shows that compete with Hollywood studios.
