Apple is set to release its first iPhone 16e on February 28, marking a shift from the SE branding. Some experts believe this could mean a new iPhone e model every year, but others remain skeptical.
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the use of a number in the name instead of “SE” could suggest an annual upgrade cycle.
In the past, Apple updated the iPhone SE every two to three years. If this pattern holds, an iPhone 17e may not arrive until 2027 or later.
iPhone 16e: A New Strategy for Apple
Apple has positioned the iPhone 16e as a more affordable version of its flagship models. Unlike previous SE models, which were budget-friendly, the 16e is priced $170 higher than the last iPhone SE.
It offers most flagship features but with some trade-offs, making it a mid-range option rather than a budget phone.
Gurman believes Apple will monitor early sales before deciding on the future of the “e” series. If demand is strong, Apple could consider more frequent updates, but it is unlikely to follow a strict yearly release cycle.
Will There Be an iPhone 17e?
Apple’s typical strategy suggests that the iPhone 16e will remain in the lineup for at least a few years. When the iPhone 17 series launches this fall, Apple will likely discontinue the iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max, but the iPhone 16e should stay at its current price.
While some speculate about an iPhone 17e in 2026, many experts believe the next update won’t come until 2027 or 2028, possibly with an iPhone 18e.
For now, the iPhone 16e remains a significant shift in Apple’s lineup. Whether it leads to annual updates or remains on a longer upgrade cycle will depend on its sales performance in the coming months.
