Why ‘The Rig’ on Prime Video Is a Must-Watch Sci-Fi Thriller

Prime Video’s The Rig is a hidden gem that deserves more attention. This supernatural sci-fi thriller, set on an isolated oil rig in the North Sea, returned for its second season on January 2, 2025. If you missed it, now’s the time to catch up.

In season 1, the crew of the Kinloch Bravo oil rig is cut off from the outside world by a mysterious fog that brings strange supernatural forces.

Paranoia takes hold, and relationships among the crew members begin to unravel as they face new, inexplicable dangers.

Season 2 picks up with the survivors trapped at a secretive facility called “the Stac” in the Arctic Circle, where they deal with the aftermath of the first season’s deadly events, corporate cover-ups, and even more perilous threats.

While The Rig may not be perfect, its isolated setting, supernatural elements, and tense atmosphere make it a compelling watch. The show has a Doctor Who-like vibe, with Lovecraftian elements and moments of body horror.

The claustrophobic settings, including the oil rig and the secretive labs of the Stac, enhance the tension and mystery. The talented cast, including Iain Glen and Mark Addy, elevate the script, even when it leans on exposition-heavy dialogue.

Though the CGI could be sharper, The Rig offers a satisfying sci-fi experience, especially with its short, binge-worthy six-episode seasons. If you’re looking for a new thriller to dive into, The Rig is definitely worth your time.
