Why the iPhone 16e is the Best Option for Most Users

When advising friends on which Apple device to buy, I usually start by understanding what’s important to them. For Macs, the launch of the M1 MacBook Air changed my advice dramatically.

Before its release, I often recommended an iPad with a keyboard for basic tasks like email, web browsing, and writing. It was portable, had great battery life, and even supported cellular options.

However, the M1 MacBook Air closed the gap with its Apple Silicon chips, offering exceptional performance, portability, and battery life that made iPadOS seem less attractive for most.

This shift in thinking mirrors what’s happening with the iPhone 16e. Until now, recommending the best iPhone wasn’t always straightforward.

Depending on needs, the choice could range from the base iPhone model to the Plus, Pro, or even last year’s Pro models. But with the iPhone 16e, the decision has become much simpler.

iPhone 16e vs. the Rest of the Line-Up

The current iPhone lineup now includes:

  • iPhone 15
  • iPhone 16e
  • iPhone 16
  • iPhone 16 Pro / Pro Max

For most people, photographers will still want the Pro models, but for everyone else, the iPhone 16e now offers the best value.

The iPhone 15 is becoming less attractive due to the lack of Apple Intelligence support, which may not matter immediately but will become a significant differentiator in a few years.

The iPhone 16e: The Default Recommendation

Unless you specifically need features like Dynamic Island, extra brightness, or MagSafe, the iPhone 16e is now the best choice for most people. It’s akin to the MacBook Air decision for Macs: unless you need a specific feature that’s only in the Pro models, the 16e is the way to go.

For those who don’t need cutting-edge camera features, the iPhone 16e offers all the essentials, including Apple Intelligence, improved performance, and excellent battery life. The decision has never been clearer—iPhone 16e is the default recommendation for most users.
