Meta has confirmed a dangerous hacking attack on WhatsApp users. This attack uses spyware that does not need the user to click anything. Hackers can infect phones without any interaction from the victim.
Meta says the attack targeted journalists and civil society members. Around 90 high-risk users were affected.
These users were spread across more than 20 countries. The attack used spyware from an Israeli company called Paragon Solutions.
The spyware, called Graphite, is very powerful. It can fully control a hacked phone. Hackers can read messages, even from encrypted apps like WhatsApp and Signal. This spyware is similar to Pegasus, a tool used in past cyberattacks.
Meta has sent legal warnings to Paragon Solutions. It is also looking at further legal action. The company says it will continue working to protect user privacy.
