WhatsApp Teams Up with Google to Help Users Verify Image Origins

WhatsApp has partnered with Google to introduce a new feature aimed at fighting misinformation.

The feature, which is currently being tested in the latest beta version of WhatsApp Web, allows users to verify the authenticity of images received on the platform.

This new tool, called “Search the web,” enables users to perform a reverse image search via Google, offering additional context and helping to identify if an image has been manipulated.

The tool is designed to be easily accessible through the three-dot menu in the image viewer. It eliminates the need for users to download and upload images to a browser, streamlining the verification process.

Importantly, WhatsApp ensures that the content of the images is not accessed during the search, maintaining user privacy.

The feature has been available for testing on the Android app since November, and while Meta has yet to officially announce its launch, it is expected to be rolled out to all users on both WhatsApp Web and Android in the coming weeks.
