Many Facebook and Instagram users are upset after getting their accounts banned without clear reasons. These bans have stopped people from sharing with friends, running their businesses, and joining important online groups.
Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram, recently admitted there was a technical error that suspended some Facebook Groups by mistake. The company has not said there is a larger problem, but many users say the bans affect personal, business, and group accounts across Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.
Brittany Watson from Ontario, Canada, started a petition after her Facebook account was disabled for nine days. She says her account mattered to her because it stored memories and helped her stay connected with loved ones. “There is a problem—it is personal accounts, it is business accounts, Facebook pages, and Groups,” she said.
More than 25,000 people have already signed this petition. On Reddit and other forums, thousands more say they were banned with no clear explanation. Some users are even considering legal action against Meta.
John Dale, a group administrator from London, lost access to a Facebook group with over 5,000 members. He says Facebook gave little information and no customer service. He cannot post or approve new content in his group.
Michelle DeMelo, who runs several business pages, says her income dropped when Meta banned her accounts. Clients could not reach her, and her reputation suffered. Michelle’s accounts were restored only after the BBC contacted Meta, but she says there was no clear way to fix the problem herself.
Some users think Meta’s artificial intelligence (AI) wrongly marks accounts as breaking rules. Sam Tall, a university student from Bournemouth, says his Instagram and Facebook accounts were banned for violating community standards. His appeal was rejected within minutes, making him feel that no human reviewed his case.
Meta says it uses AI and people to review accounts. The company says people can appeal if they think a ban is a mistake, but many users say the process feels unfair and confusing.
The bans have left people without access to friends, memories, and work. Many hope Meta will listen and offer better support for users who lose their accounts without warning.
