FX & Hulu - 'Shōgun' Series

FX and Hulu have officially announced that they are planning two additional seasons of the popular drama series “Shōgun.” The network is collaborating with the estate of author James Clavell to create these new seasons. A team of writers will begin working this summer to continue the story beyond Clavell’s original novel.

The first season of “Shōgun” concluded in late April and became FX’s most-watched show ever in terms of global streaming hours. It consisted of ten episodes and is currently available on Hulu. The show had an impressive debut, with nine million streaming views worldwide on platforms like Hulu, Disney+, and Star+—making it the best worldwide debut for a general entertainment scripted series on Disney platforms.

FX CEO John Landgraf expressed openness to producing more high-quality shows like “Shōgun” if viewers show interest. Actor Hiroyuki Sanada, who plays a key role in the series, has already agreed to return for additional seasons if they are greenlit by FX.

Originally intended as a limited series, “Shōgun” is based on James Clavell’s 1975 novel and was previously adapted by NBC in 1980. The recent news about FX’s plans for more “Shōgun” content surfaced after a leak on May 10, coinciding with Emmy submissions. FX decided to submit “Shōgun” in the drama categories.
