Samsung is working on new image sensors that could be used in Apple’s iPhone 18 series, expected to launch in 2026.
For years, Sony has been the main supplier of image sensors for iPhones. However, Samsung is now developing a 3-layer stacked sensor that may replace Sonyโs sensors in future iPhone models.
The 3-layer stacked sensor is designed to improve photo quality. It separates the photodiode layer, which captures light, from the processing layer, which processes the captured signals.
This technology allows faster image capturing and better photos, especially in low-light conditions. It also improves color accuracy and dynamic range. Samsung’s 3-layer sensor is said to be more advanced than Sonyโs current Exmor RS sensors used in iPhones.
The new sensor is expected to be used in the 48MP wide cameras of the iPhone 18. While Samsung is working on this for Apple, it is also developing a 500MP sensor for its own Galaxy phones.
This move marks a significant shift, as the iPhone 18 will be the first Apple device to use Samsung’s image sensors, replacing the long-standing partnership with Sony.
In addition to the new image sensor, the iPhone 18 series will also feature Apple’s new A20 and A20 Plus processors, built by TSMC using a 2nm process node. The iPhone 18 is expected to be released in September 2026.
