Samsung is reducing its foldable phone production for 2025 after the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Flip 6 failed to meet expectations.
A report from Korea says Samsung plans to produce only 5 million units of the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Flip 7 combined. This is a big drop from the 8.2 million units made for the current generation.
The company had hoped for a 10% sales growth for the Fold 6 and Flip 6 but fell short of this target. Pre-order numbers were lower than expected, and competition from other brands further hurt sales.
Samsung has relied on existing foldable users upgrading their devices, but this strategy did not work as well this year.
Despite scaling back production, Samsung is exploring new designs and form factors for its foldable lineup. Reports suggest the company may introduce cheaper Flip models and more expensive Fold options in 2025.
Samsung is shifting focus to its Galaxy S series. The company plans to produce 37.4 million units of the Galaxy S25 series, a 7% increase compared to the Galaxy S24. A new Galaxy S25 โSlimโ model is expected to add another 3 million units to this total.
Other foldable brands, especially in China, are also lowering their production forecasts for 2025.
Samsungโs adjustments highlight the growing challenges in the foldable phone market as competition increases.
