Perplexity Launches AI Browser to Compete with Google Chrome

    Perplexity AI Browser, Comet

Perplexity AI, a startup backed by Nvidia, has launched an artificial intelligence-powered web browser called Comet, marking its official entry into the competitive browser market. The company aims to challenge Google Chrome, the current global leader in browser usage.

Comet is designed to simplify how users search and interact online. The browser includes a built-in assistant that can answer questions, summarize content, compare products, book meetings, and perform various tasks in a single interface. It uses “agentic AI,” which means it can make decisions and take actions on behalf of the user.

Currently, Comet is available to subscribers of Perplexity Max, a $200-per-month premium plan. Broader access will be offered via invite throughout the summer.

Google Chrome held a dominant 68% share of the global browser market in June, according to data from StatCounter. Other browsers such as Safari, Microsoft Edge, and Firefox remain far behind in market share.

Comet sets itself apart by focusing on user privacy. It stores data locally and does not use personal information to train AI models. This could appeal to users concerned about data security.

Perplexity is backed by major investors including Jeff Bezos, SoftBank, and Nvidia. With Comet, the company is also looking to grow in advertising and e-commerce—markets traditionally led by tech giants like Google.

However, Perplexity has faced criticism from media organizations including News Corp, Forbes, Wired, and Dow Jones, which allege the company used their content without permission or payment. In response, Perplexity has launched a publisher partnership program to collaborate with news outlets.

The browser’s release follows recent moves by other tech companies into AI-powered search. OpenAI added a search engine to ChatGPT in 2024, while Google launched its AI Overviews feature in May 2025.
