Nintendo has officially placed The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom within the franchise’s complex timeline, two months after the game’s release on the Nintendo Switch.
According to the updated lore, Echoes of Wisdom resides on the alternate timeline that emerges if Link were to fail in 1998’s Ocarina of Time.
This timeline sits between Tri Force Heroes (2015) and the decline of the Hyrule Kingdom, an event that happens before the series’ NES debut in 1986.
This addition marks the second major change to the Zelda timeline in 2024. Earlier this year, Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom were officially separated from the timeline entirely, raising speculation of a potential reboot of the series’ chronology — though today’s adjustment likely squashes that idea.
Despite these updates, the relevance of the Zelda timeline remains a topic of debate. As Polygon’s Jeffrey Parkin explored, while an official history provides fans something to speculate over, it doesn’t fundamentally affect the games themselves.
The emotional weight of moments like Princess Zelda’s breakdown in Breath of the Wild remains impactful, whether or not it’s situated within a complex, ever-shifting timeline.
Ultimately, Zelda fans will continue to debate the chronology, and as long as there are games, the Legend of Zelda saga will endure — and so will the ongoing fan theories.
