Minecraft, the wildly popular sandbox video game, is getting the animated treatment at Netflix. Fifteen years after its initial launch, the streaming giant has announced plans for a new original series set in the world of Minecraft, featuring an all-new story and characters.
The upcoming Minecraft animated series promises to showcase the beloved blocky world “in a new light,” according to Netflix’s announcement. While specific details are scarce at this stage, the production will be spearheaded by WildBrain Studios, the team behind acclaimed adaptations like Sonic Prime and Ninjago.
The Minecraft series joins a growing slate of video game adaptations hitting the streaming and theatrical circuits. From the critically acclaimed The Last of Us and the highly anticipated Fallout series to the box office successes of the Mario and Sonic movies, video game properties are experiencing a renaissance across various media platforms.
Netflix, in particular, has been aggressively expanding its video game adaptation lineup, with projects based on renowned franchises such as Castlevania, Dota 2, Gears of War, Splinter Cell, Tomb Raider, and Mega Man, among others. The platform previously hosted the interactive Minecraft: Story Mode series.
This new Minecraft animated venture isn’t the only adaptation of the iconic game in the works. A live-action Minecraft movie, starring Jack Black, is slated for a theatrical release in 2024, adding to the growing excitement around the beloved franchise.
While the Minecraft animated series is currently listed as “coming soon” on Netflix, fans eagerly await further updates on its release date and the creative team’s vision for bringing the beloved blocky world to life in an exciting new way.
