Mystery Wireless Charging Breakthrough to Be Revealed Next Week

The Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) has teased a “new era of wireless charging” set to be revealed next week, though details remain scarce about what the announcement will contain.

The organisation behind the Qi wireless charging standard posted a brief message on social media platform X, stating it is “heading into a new era of wireless charging” with more information coming on July 23. The accompanying image shows only the words “It’s Coming” alongside a lightning bolt symbol.

The timing follows what industry observers have called a troubled launch for Qi2, the current wireless charging standard. The WPC has not provided specific details about what the announcement will cover.

Several possibilities exist for what the consortium might reveal. The announcement could relate to Qi 2.2, the newest standard update that has recently begun appearing on accessories but has yet to be widely adopted by smartphone manufacturers. Google’s upcoming Pixel 10 series is expected to be among the first phones to support the updated standard.

Alternatively, the WPC might be preparing to announce another new Qi standard update, which would break from the usual pattern of releasing updates at the start of each year.

The announcement could also extend beyond smartphones entirely. Wireless charging technology has applications across multiple product categories, and the WPC has previously introduced “Ki” as a kitchen-focused wireless power system for appliances and cooking equipment.

The wireless charging industry has seen steady growth in recent years, with the technology becoming standard on most premium smartphones and expanding into accessories like earbuds and smartwatches.

The WPC’s announcement comes as manufacturers continue working to improve charging speeds and efficiency while maintaining device compatibility across different brands and models.
