Meta Platforms has announced its first-ever LlamaCon conference, set to take place on April 29, 2025. The event will focus on open-source artificial intelligence and highlight Meta’s latest advancements in AI technology.

LlamaCon is named after Meta’s Llama AI models, which play a key role in the company’s AI strategy. The event aims to provide developers and researchers with insights into the newest updates and applications of these models. While Meta has not yet shared the full agenda, more details are expected in the coming weeks.

This announcement comes ahead of Meta’s annual Connect conference, scheduled for September 17-18, 2025. While Connect traditionally focuses on virtual and augmented reality, this year’s event is also expected to explore AI integrations across Meta’s platforms.

Meta has been investing heavily in AI, with reports suggesting that billions of dollars are being allocated to AI research and infrastructure in 2025. One of its most ambitious projects includes training the upcoming Llama 4 model on a GPU cluster of over 100,000 Nvidia H100 units, making it one of the largest AI training clusters in the world.

The Llama models have gained popularity among startups and researchers due to their open-source nature. By making these models accessible, Meta aims to democratize AI development and foster innovation. This strategy sets Meta apart from competitors who focus on proprietary AI systems.

Meta’s chief AI scientist, Yann LeCun, is a strong advocate for open-source AI, emphasizing that it encourages faster innovation and collaboration. The success of other open-source AI projects, such as those from DeepSeek, further supports this approach.

Beyond software, Meta is also exploring AI-powered hardware. The company has hinted at new smart glasses with advanced AI features, following the success of the AI-powered Ray-Ban Smart Glasses, which have sold over 2 million units since their launch in October 2023. This suggests that Meta is working to integrate AI into everyday consumer devices.

As Meta continues its open-source AI initiatives, the tech industry is closely watching. While open-source models promote transparency and collaboration, they also raise security concerns. Meta aims to address these challenges by implementing usage guidelines and fostering a responsible AI community.

With LlamaCon 2025, Meta is reinforcing its position as a leader in open-source AI, shaping the future of artificial intelligence for developers, businesses, and consumers alike.
