Grand Theft Auto Online is nearing its 11th anniversary, but that doesn’t mean the end is near—at least not yet.
Take-Two’s CEO, Strauss Zelnick, recently hinted that GTA Online could continue to receive updates, even after Grand Theft Auto 6 launches later this year, as long as enough players are still engaged with the game.
GTA Online Could Stay Alive After GTA 6
During an interview with IGN, Zelnick addressed concerns about the future of GTA Online, especially with the highly anticipated GTA 6 coming in the fall of 2025.
Zelnick explained that Take-Two has a history of supporting games long after their initial release, especially when there’s an active player base.
He cited the example of NBA 2K Online in China, which has continued to receive updates long after its launch. “We support our properties when the consumers are involved with those titles,” Zelnick said.
While he didn’t confirm that GTA Online would continue to receive updates, his comments strongly suggest that as long as there is demand, Rockstar Games would likely keep the game alive with new content.
Will Rockstar Balance Both Games?
If GTA Online continues to thrive post-GTA 6, the question remains: How will Rockstar Games manage updates for both games? It’s possible the studio might bring in additional resources or even other studios to help maintain GTA Online while working on GTA 6 and its own online multiplayer modes.
Take-Two’s comments highlight how GTA Online is still a highly profitable game, so it’s no surprise that the company would be motivated to keep it updated for the long term.
What’s Next for GTA 6?
As for GTA 6, Zelnick remains confident that the game will launch in the fall of 2025, despite the risks that could cause delays.
But even with GTA 6 on the horizon, GTA Online still has plenty of potential for future updates, especially if players continue to flock to Los Santos for more action.
