Duolingo, the popular language-learning app, has left users shocked and amused after announcing that its beloved mascot, Duo the Owl, has died.
What started as a single post has now turned into a full-blown social media mystery, with the company doubling down on the bizarre storyline.
A Viral Mystery Unfolds
The drama began earlier this week when Duolingo posted on X (formerly Twitter) that its green owl mascot had passed away, with the cause of death under investigation.
The company hinted at possible suspects, joking that Duo may have died waiting for users to complete their lessons.
Adding to the spectacle, Duolingo’s other characters, Lily and Zari, were seen in a TikTok video carrying Duo’s coffin through the office and into a pickup truck.
Later, a follow-up post showed Duo being hit by a Tesla Cybertruck, sending him through various realms of the universe while the company offered a reward for identifying the driver.
All Duolingo Characters Are Now “Dead”
As if one character’s demise wasn’t enough, Duolingo escalated the mystery on February 13, announcing that all of its characters are now dead.
The company changed its profile picture to a deceased version of Duo, and in another video, it teased reasons behind the other mascots’ “deaths”—but remained silent about what truly happened to the owl.
What’s Really Going On?
While this dramatic campaign could hint at a marketing stunt for an upcoming collaboration or rebranding, Duolingo has remained cryptic.
The company even took the opportunity to plug its premium subscription, Duolingo Max, as a way to honor Duo’s memory.
Adding another layer of confusion, Duolingo randomly mentioned singer Dua Lipa in one of its posts, a nod to its past jokes about shipping Duo and Dua.
As the mystery deepens, fans are left wondering: Will Duo return? Or is this the beginning of a major shake-up for Duolingo’s brand?
