Baidu, China’s leading search engine giant, has launched its latest AI model, Ernie X1, which boasts advanced reasoning capabilities.
The Ernie X1 model aims to challenge DeepSeek R1, an AI model that gained attention for delivering top-tier performance at a lower development cost.
Ernie X1: What Makes It Special?
Baidu claims that Ernie X1 excels in daily dialogue, complex calculations, and logical reasoning.
The company has also upgraded its foundation model to Ernie 4.5, which, according to Baidu, outperforms OpenAI’s GPT-4.5 in text generation.
Free Access and Open-Source Move
In a strategic move to dominate the AI market, Baidu has made all tiers of its AI service, including Ernie X1, freely available to chatbot users.
Additionally, Baidu plans to open-source its Ernie models starting June 30, aiming to attract more developers.
Baidu’s Growing AI Dominance
Baidu was the first Chinese company to launch a ChatGPT-like chatbot, but it now faces tough competition from rivals like ByteDance’s Moonshot AI and Alibaba’s Qwen model.
However, the 26% increase in Baidu’s cloud revenue in the last quarter shows how the AI boom is boosting the company’s financial growth, despite weak ad sales due to China’s economic challenges.
By integrating the Ernie models into its core search engine, Baidu aims to regain its position as a leader in the AI space and compete with global giants like OpenAI.
