Apple unveiled macOS Sequoia, the next major update to its desktop operating system, at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) on June 10, 2024.
The update is set to bring a host of new features and improvements to the Mac experience.
macOS Sequoia Release Date
While Apple has not confirmed an exact release date for macOS Sequoia, the company typically releases new macOS versions in the fall, with the developer beta available immediately and a public beta following a few weeks later. Based on past release patterns, macOS Sequoia is expected to launch sometime in September or October 2024.
macOS Sequoia Supported Devices
macOS Sequoia will support a wide range of Mac models, with the exception of the 2018 and 2019 MacBook Air, which will no longer be supported. The oldest models expected to be compatible with Sequoia are the 2018 MacBook Pro, 2018 Mac Mini, and 2017 iMac Pro.
However, to take advantage of the new Apple Intelligence features, users will need a Mac with an M1 chip or later. This includes the MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, iMac, Mac Mini, and Mac Studio models released in 2020 or later, as well as the Mac Pro with an M2 Ultra chip.
macOS Sequoia New Features
macOS Sequoia introduces a range of new features and improvements, with a strong focus on artificial intelligence and productivity:
- Apple Intelligence: A new AI-powered system that integrates with macOS, iOS, and iPadOS to deliver intelligent features and capabilities, such as language and image generation, task automation, and personalized recommendations.
- iPhone Mirroring: Allows users to access and control their iPhone directly from their Mac, even if the phone is in another room.
- Safari Updates: Includes the new Highlights feature for effortless information discovery on webpages while browsing.
- Passwords App: A dedicated app for managing and organizing passwords and credentials.
- Gaming Improvements: Offers a more immersive gaming experience and a selection of new titles, including Assassin’s Creed Shadows and Frostpunk 2.
- Notes Enhancements: Adds features like audio transcription, summarization, and equation solving powered by Apple Intelligence.
- Calendar and Reminders Integration: Allows users to view and manage tasks from Reminders directly in the Calendar app.

The developer beta of macOS Sequoia is available now through the Apple Developer Program, while the public beta will be released next month through the Apple Beta Software Program. The final version of macOS Sequoia will be available as a free software update this fall.
