Former NFL executive Doug Whaley believes Dallas Cowboys star Micah Parsons will remain with the team despite his ongoing contract dispute.
Speaking to TMZ Sports, Whaley — who served as the Buffalo Bills’ general manager from 2013 to 2017 and is now Senior Vice President of Player Personnel for the UFL — said he does not expect owner Jerry Jones to trade the three-time Pro Bowler.
Whaley compared the situation to past contract standoffs involving Myles Garrett of the Cleveland Browns and T.J. Watt of the Pittsburgh Steelers. “Guess what gets everybody on the same page? The dollars,” Whaley said, suggesting that a lucrative new deal will eventually resolve the conflict.
This week, Jones claimed he offered Parsons a contract that would make him the highest-paid guaranteed player in the NFL outside of quarterbacks. Whaley said if that is accurate, he expects the two sides to reach an agreement soon.
Parsons, currently in the final year of his rookie contract, is set to earn around $24 million this season. The Cowboys also hold the option to use the franchise tag on him for the following two years.
The 24-year-old linebacker has requested a trade and recently removed references to the Cowboys from his social media account. Still, Whaley said he sees the dispute ending with a long-term deal rather than a split.
Hall of Fame quarterback Kurt Warner also weighed in, telling TMZ Sports he does not believe the public tension will cause lasting damage between Parsons and the Cowboys.
