Samsung has just released the Galaxy Z Fold7, its thinnest and lightest foldable phone yet. However, new reports from South Korea suggest that the company is already planning changes for its next model, the Galaxy Z Fold8, expected to launch in July 2026.

One of the key changes could involve the materials used for the phone’s backplate. Samsung is reportedly considering switching from titanium, which it introduced with the Galaxy Z Fold7, back to carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP). The company had used CFRP in the Galaxy Z Fold3 through Fold6 but moved to titanium for the Fold7 to reduce the device’s thickness.

The decision to return to plastic may seem like a downgrade, but sources say Samsung is weighing this option due to multiple factors. Titanium offers strength and a premium feel but can interfere with certain technologies, such as Samsung’s S Pen. The Fold7 removed S Pen support partly because of this issue.

Samsung is currently working on new technology to create a slimmer digitizer that would allow the Fold8 to reintroduce S Pen support. Alternatively, the company may consider using different stylus technology, similar to the Apple Pencil, which would avoid interference with metal components altogether.

Supply chain stability is another reason behind Samsung’s testing of new materials. With global trade tensions, especially the ongoing tariff disputes involving the U.S., Samsung is reportedly trying to avoid potential disruptions that could affect the availability or cost of titanium.

As the Galaxy Z Fold8 is still a year away, these plans are not final. Samsung may continue to adjust its design based on technological developments and market conditions.
