The Sonic the Hedgehog movie franchise is now a major success, but the first film had a rocky start.
Fans strongly criticized the original “Ugly Sonic” design, forcing the studio to delay the movie and rework Sonic’s look. Writers Pat Casey and Josh Miller recently shared how this delay affected the 2020 movie.
During an interview with Collider, Casey confirmed that the live-action scenes and overall story remained the same, but the animated prologue was adjusted.
Miller added that the delay gave the team extra time to improve the script and refine the movie. He called this delay an “interesting miracle,” as filmmakers rarely get such opportunities.
The Ugly Sonic design backlash also led to changes that made the movie more faithful to Sonic’s video game origins.
The animated prologue, which included Sonic’s life with Longclaw and the Echidnas, was likely added or reworked during this time. These elements tied the movie closer to its source material, pleasing fans.
The redesign turned out to be a critical decision. The first movie became a box-office hit, followed by a successful sequel and the recently released Sonic the Hedgehog 3. The franchise’s newfound popularity has even helped revitalize Sonic’s overall brand.
