Xiaohongshu, also known as RedNote internationally, is rapidly gaining popularity in the U.S. as TikTok faces the looming threat of a ban.

Founded in 2013 by Charlwin Mao and Miranda Qu, the platform has soared to the top of the U.S. App Store, with many users tagging themselves as #TikTokRefugees, seeking alternatives to TikTok as it nears its possible shutdown.

Primarily an e-commerce platform, Xiaohongshu has evolved into a multifaceted social media hub. Often compared to Instagram, it integrates reviews, travel guides, e-commerce, and memes, making it a unique blend of social networking and shopping.

Its Chinese name, “Little Red Book,” originates from its early days as a collection of PDF shopping guides, not a reference to Mao Zedong’s quotations.

Xiaohongshu now boasts 300 million monthly active users, with a predominantly young, urban, and female demographic. This makes it particularly attractive to both Chinese and global brands.

The app’s success has attracted major investors, including Alibaba, Tencent, and DST Global, and it was valued at $20 billion in a 2021 funding round. With an expected profit of over $1 billion in 2024, Xiaohongshu is proving to be a significant player in the global social media landscape.

Beyond its commercial success, Xiaohongshu has transformed travel in China and beyond. The platform is known for its user-generated content, which many users trust for travel advice, making it a go-to resource for itineraries and recommendations.

Tourist destinations in Asia, the U.K., and New Zealand are increasingly using Xiaohongshu to attract mainland Chinese tourists, further expanding the app’s influence.

As TikTok’s future in the U.S. remains uncertain due to concerns over data privacy and national security, Xiaohongshu is stepping into the spotlight as a potential alternative for U.S. users.

While the app’s rapid rise is partly due to TikTok’s troubles, it remains to be seen whether Xiaohongshu can maintain its momentum and navigate the scrutiny that may come with its Chinese origins.
