Trump Suspends Refugee Program and Tightens Asylum Rules

President Donald Trump has signed executive orders that pause the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program (USRAP) and restrict asylum seekers.

The refugee program suspension is indefinite, citing rising migration and capacity concerns. State and local governments will have more input on refugee placement.

A second order limits asylum claims at the southern border, requiring strict documentation. A federal judge has ruled that asylum cannot be fully denied under U.S. law.

The orders expand expedited deportations and require detention of undocumented immigrants during legal proceedings. Federal funding may be cut for sanctuary cities and groups aiding undocumented migrants.

Immigrant rights groups criticize the orders as harsh and risky for refugees and asylum seekers. Supporters say the measures improve border security and public safety.

Legal challenges are ongoing, and the effects on U.S. immigration policy will unfold in coming months.
