Windows 10 Users Must Upgrade to Get Latest Office Tools, Says Microsoft

Microsoft has announced it will stop adding new features to its Office apps, known as Microsoft 365, for Windows 10 users starting in August 2026. The decision means users will need to upgrade to Windows 11 to receive the latest improvements to Microsoft 365 apps like Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

The change will affect both personal and business users. Microsoft 365 Personal and Family subscribers, along with Current Channel business users, will lose access to new features in August 2026.

Enterprise customers using the monthly channel will follow on October 13, 2026, and semi-annual enterprise channel users will see feature updates stop on January 12, 2027.

Microsoft confirmed that security updates for Office apps on Windows 10 will continue until October 10, 2028. This allows users to keep their software protected, but without access to any new tools or enhancements.

Earlier this year, Microsoft reversed a previous decision and agreed to extend security updates for Office apps on Windows 10. However, the company did not disclose at the time that it would still cut off new feature updates starting in 2026.

The move is part of Microsoft’s broader effort to encourage users to switch to Windows 11. Windows 10 will reach its official end-of-life on October 14, 2025, but consumers can choose to extend security support for one additional year at no cost if they enable Windows Backup.

Despite the push to upgrade, millions of devices worldwide still run Windows 10. Even so, Windows 11 has now overtaken Windows 10 as the most widely used desktop operating system.
