The summer box office season has officially begun, and Marvel’s Thunderbolts leads the way. The latest Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movie opened with $76 million in North America, making it the top film of the weekend.
It also received high praise from critics, with an 88% Certified Fresh rating — the best for an MCU movie since Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Although Thunderbolts made less than some past Marvel openings, its strong reception gives the studio hope for better results ahead.
The film will soon pass The Marvels’ entire domestic earnings. However, it still trails Captain America: Brave New World, which opened with $88.8 million.
Meanwhile, Ryan Coogler’s Sinners continues its successful run. It earned $33 million in its third weekend and has now made nearly $180 million in North America.
With steady momentum, the film could reach $275 million or more, despite having a smaller international total.
A Minecraft Movie is also performing well. It added $13.7 million this weekend, bringing its domestic total to over $398 million. The film is expected to pass $400 million this week and may reach the $1 billion mark globally soon.
Other films in the top 10 include The Accountant 2, Until Dawn, and The Amateur. While some sequels are underperforming, lower-budget projects like Until Dawn are on track to make a modest profit.
