Threads Gets Community Notes Feature, Allowing Users to Add Context to Posts

Meta is introducing a new way for users to contribute to fact-checking on Threads by adding a Community Notes feature.

This feature, which has already been spotted in the iPhone version of Threads, allows users to write notes on posts they believe might be misleading or inaccurate.

How Community Notes Works

The Community Notes feature lets users add background information, tips, or insights to posts that may require clarification.

Notes will be anonymous, and users can submit them to provide context or correct misinformation. If a note is rated as helpful by others, it may be published on the post.

Users can also join the Community Notes program waitlist through a link in the app. Meta aims to use a community-driven approach to determine when posts need additional context, moving away from traditional fact-checking methods.

Zuckerberg’s Vision for Community Notes

Mark Zuckerberg announced the change as part of a broader shift in Meta’s platform policies. He acknowledged that the idea was inspired by X (formerly Twitter), which already has a similar feature.

The Community Notes feature will first be available to U.S. users in the coming months, with plans to expand to more countries next year.

Changes to Meta’s Policies

In addition to introducing Community Notes, Meta will also lift restrictions on certain topics like politics and human rights.

The company has faced criticism for ending its diversity, equality, and inclusion program, which has sparked backlash from some users.

There is no exact timeline for when Community Notes will be fully implemented on Threads or other Meta platforms, but the feature is expected to roll out soon.
