OpenAI has delayed the release of ChatGPT’s built-in image generator for free users. CEO Sam Altman announced on Wednesday that the rollout has been put on hold because the tool is more popular than expected.
The image generation feature, powered by OpenAI’s latest model, GPT-4o, was introduced on Tuesday. It allows users to create AI-generated images directly within ChatGPT.
Since its launch, social media has been flooded with images, especially those styled after Studio Ghibli, a trend that even Altman joined.
GPT-4o improves text rendering and uses a step-by-step process to generate images from left to right and top to bottom.
Currently, this feature is only available to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Team subscribers. OpenAI has not provided a new timeline for when free users will gain access.
As AI-generated art continues to gain popularity, OpenAI faces challenges in managing demand. For now, free-tier users will have to wait for further updates from the company.
