Spotify is trying out a new emergency alert system in Sweden. The music streaming app might soon send out warnings about accidents and other serious events.

This was discovered in Spotify’s app code and later confirmed by the company. A Spotify spokesperson said they often test new features to improve user experience, but not all tests become permanent.

The system would use Sweden’s existing public alert network. It’s not clear why Spotify is adding this feature, but it could make the app more essential to users or prepare for possible future regulations.Right now, the test is only happening in Sweden.

Other tech companies like Meta and Google already have similar alert systems. If successful, Spotify users in Sweden might start getting important safety messages alongside their music and podcasts. It’s unknown if this feature will expand to other countries.
