Samsung is exploring the development of new wearable AI devices, including smart earrings, rings, necklaces, and glasses, as part of its broader push into artificial intelligence hardware. The company’s focus is on creating products that reduce the need for users to interact directly with smartphones.
Speaking to CNN during the Galaxy Unpacked event in New York on July 9, Samsung’s mobile division COO, Won-joon Choi, said the company believes the future of AI tech should be wearable and hands-free.
“We believe it should be something you don’t need to carry — like glasses, earrings, watches, rings, or necklaces,” Choi said. The goal is to create devices that make tasks easier to complete through AI without requiring manual input like typing or swiping.
This move follows a broader industry trend as major tech companies look to move beyond smartphones and into AI-driven devices. Companies like Meta have already made headway with smart glasses. Meta has sold over 2 million pairs of its Ray-Ban smart glasses since 2023 and recently acquired a stake in Ray-Ban’s parent company, EssilorLuxottica.
Samsung is also developing smart glasses, though few details have been released. According to Choi, not everyone prefers wearing glasses, which is why Samsung is exploring alternative wearable formats.
While the company is considering various concepts — including AI-powered pendants, rings, or bracelets — not all of them are guaranteed to become commercial products. Many ideas may remain internal prototypes.
Samsung’s strategy differs from some failed attempts in the AI wearable market. Products like the Humane AI Pin and Rabbit R1 struggled due to high costs and technical issues. Samsung aims to avoid these pitfalls by designing wearables as companions to smartphones, much like its existing smartwatches.
A new wave of AI wearables is expected to change how users interact with technology. Samsung appears to be betting big on this shift — and trying to stay ahead of rivals like Apple, which has yet to reveal a similar plan.
