What is AirChat? – How it works & How to Use

0

There is no shortage of social media apps out there. Let’s welcome another new contender in this already space.

What is Airchat?

Imagine Twitter meets Clubhouse. That’s what AirChat basically is.

Created by Naval Ravikant and Brian Norgard, AirChat is a new social media app. Airchat is considered different because it uses both audio/video and text.

How Airchat Works

Users share voice messages and videos. But the app uses AI to turn those audio/video posts into text on the feed.

The feed looks like Twitter or Threads, with text updates. But Airchat will automatically play the original audio/video for each post as you scroll through the feed. It’s like the feed is talking to you.

You can also reply to posts with your voice instead of typing. And the feed keeps scrolling and playing posts even if your screen is off, like a podcast.

Airchat also has private messaging using the same audio/text system.

Current State of Airchat

Right now, Airchat is invite-only and has limited invites you can send. The app is still working out access and growth plans.

The audio-to-text system works smoothly. But Airchat doesn’t have much content moderation yet, and the app can freeze sometimes.

Will Airchat Succeed?

For a new social network to succeed, it needs a solid base of users posting interesting content. It’s hard to see that happening with Airchat’s limited access currently.

You can probably wait for Airchat to open up to everyone before trying it out. The appeal may be limited for an audio-based network where you have to actively record and post your voice constantly.

Eiffel 65 – Blue (Da Ba Dee) [EDM Throwback]

In 1998, a quirky little song blasted onto the music scene that was unlike anything else at the time. “Blue (Da Ba Dee)” by the Italian euro-pop group Eiffel 65 became an unlikely global phenomenon, thanks to its insanely catchy tune and totally nonsensical lyrics that sounded like gibberish – “da ba dee da ba daa.”

The upbeat, almost nursery rhyme-like track was just pure fun and energy packed into under 4 minutes. Against all odds, people all around the world quickly fell in love with this goofy yet infectious song. Perhaps it was the whimsical, childlike nature of the lyrics and melodies that struck a chord. Or maybe it was the happy, dance-inspiring vibes that provided a pick-me-up during the stresses of everyday life.

Whatever the reasons, “Blue (Da Ba Dee)” became an unlikely crossover smash, and its legacy has endured through numerous samples and remixes, including the most recent appearances in “Endless Fashion” by Lil Uzi Vert feat. Nicki Minaj (2023) and “I’m Good (Blue)” by David Guetta and Bebe Rexha (2022).

Chart Dominance

The song’s meteoric rise was unprecedented for a relatively unknown European act like Eiffel 65. “Blue (Da Ba Dee)” made it to the top 10 charts in over 20 countries across Europe, Australia, and the Americas. In the United States, it peaked at an impressive number 6 on the prestigious Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Its biggest success came in the UK, where the maddeningly catchy track dominated the singles chart for four consecutive weeks at number 1. The hit single was even nominated for two major Grammy awards in 2000 – Record of the Year and Best Dance Recording, though it didn’t win.

Enduring Popularity

While Eiffel 65 practically disappeared after their one big novelty smash, the legacy of “Blue (Da Ba Dee)” has incredibly endured over 20 years later. The song still gets heavy airplay and can be heard frequently in movies, TV shows, commercials and at dance clubs and parties. The silly gibberish lyrics and Eurodance rhythms have made it an iconic, quirky snapshot of the late 90s pop culture zeitgeist that people still get nostalgic over.

A Lasting Legacy

Beyond just being a fun throwback, this song’s massive crossover success paved the way for other European dance-pop acts like Aqua to make it big in the States. The song’s runaway popularity also contributed to a resurgence of interest in the bright, upbeat Eurodance and bubblegum pop genres in the early 2000s after grunge and alt-rock’s prevalence.

So while it may have seemed like a bizarre one-hit wonder at the time, the impact and legacy of Eiffel 65’s accidental masterpiece “Blue (Da Ba Dee)” turned out to be much more profound and long-lasting. The pure feel-good vibes and childlike whimsy of this unlikely hit still brings smiles over two decades since it first blew up the charts.

Delerium – Silence (Tiësto Remix) [Trance Throwback]

In the early 2000s, the trance music scene was dominated by a handful of iconic tracks that defined the genre’s sound and ethos. Among these legendary anthems is Delerium’s “Silence (Tiësto Remix),” which was released in 1997.

The Original Track

The original version of “Silence” was a downtempo, ambient track by the Canadian duo Delerium, featuring the hauntingly beautiful vocals of Sarah McLachlan from the band Sixpence None the Richer. While the track was well-received, it was Tiësto’s reimagining that propelled it to iconic status.

Tiësto’s Magical Touch

In 2000, Dutch DJ and producer Tiësto took on the task of remixing “Silence,” and the result was nothing short of magical. His interpretation transformed the melancholic original into a euphoric trance anthem, perfectly capturing the essence of the early 2000s trance sound.

A Masterclass in Production

From the opening notes, “Silence (Tiësto Remix)” showcases Tiësto’s exceptional production skills. The track builds slowly, with layers of atmospheric pads and intricate melodies gradually enveloping the listener. Sarah McLachlan’s angelic vocals soar above the captivating instrumentation, creating a profound sense of emotion and intensity.

The Iconic Breakdown

One of the most memorable moments in the track is the iconic breakdown, where the music drops to a minimal, pulsating bassline, allowing Nash’s voice to take center stage. This moment of anticipation and tension builds until the track explodes back into its euphoric chorus, sending shivers down the spines of listeners.

Global Impact and Legacy

Upon its release, “Silence (Tiësto Remix)” became an instant classic, dominating dancefloors and festivals around the world. It was a staple in DJ sets and helped solidify Tiësto’s reputation as one of the most influential trance producers of his generation.

The track’s impact extended far beyond the trance community, with its emotive melodies and haunting vocals resonating with music lovers across genres. It became a cultural touchstone, representing the height of the early 2000s trance era and cementing its place in the canon of electronic dance music classics.

Enduring Popularity

Over two decades after its release, “Silence (Tiësto Remix)” remains a beloved and influential track. Its timeless quality and emotional depth continue to captivate new generations of listeners, while also serving as a nostalgic reminder of the golden age of trance for those who experienced it firsthand.

Whether heard in a club, at a festival, or through headphones, the track’s ability to evoke a sense of euphoria and transcendence is undiminished. It stands as a testament to the power of collaboration and the enduring impact of great music on the human spirit.

Drake & Future – What A Time To Be Alive [Hip-Hop Throwback]

In September 2015, Drake and Future caught the music world off guard by dropping their joint mixtape What A Time To Be Alive with no prior promotion. The surprise release capitalized on both rappers being at the peaks of their commercial powers.

Despite no traditional rollout, the 11-track project debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart, moving over 375,000 units its first week. Powered by the duo’s combined star power, it quickly became one of the year’s biggest hip-hop releases.

Larger-Than-Life Anthems

What A Time established a cinematic, luxurious sound world filled with braggadocious raps about living lavishly and indulging in life’s excesses. Drake and Future’s trade swaggering verses celebrating their superstar lifestyles over huge looping trap beats and slick, atmospheric production.

Standout tracks like the Metro Boomin produced “Jumpman” and “Big Rings” with their slick quotable lines and infectious hooks became ubiquitous anthems. The pure chemistry between the two artists made their boastful back-and-forths sound natural and effortless.

Critical Reappraisal

While some critics dismissed What A Time as mindless and shallow upon its release, the project has aged into a highly respected cult classic over the years. Many now appreciate it as a perfectly captured time capsule of the melodic, hazy SoundCloud rap era.

Revisited listens reveal Drizzy and Future’s quotable one-liners and effortless cool to be surprisingly replayable, making the album an unlikely grower. Their unfiltered honesty about rap money, fame and vices connected in an authentic way.

Influential Mixtape Milestone

In hindsight, What A Time To Be Alive is considered an important and influential stylistic marker. The blockbuster’s crossover success exposed a wider audience to the rising “SoundCloud rap” aesthetic pioneered by Future and others.

Carrying an undeniable hit factor, the project demonstrated the commercial viability of moody, bass-heavy production and cadences that leaned heavily into infectious melody and vibe over lyrics.

For Drake, What A Time offered an early glimpse into his impressive run of high-profile rap collaborations that expanded his sound in fresh directions each time. For Future, it marked his move into becoming a mainstream superstar beyond the underground.

While ultimately a non-traditional entry into both catalogs, the surprise What A Time To Be Alive remains a towering creative intersection between two of the 2010s’ biggest hitmakers. Its reverberating influence can still be heard today.

0

Released in April 2017, Kendrick Lamar‘s fourth studio album DAMN. was an immediate critical and commercial success that solidified his status as one of the greatest rappers of his generation. Music critics universally praised the album’s masterful production, Kendrick’s intricate wordplay, and his depictions of the African-American experience.

Hit Singles

The hard-hitting album contains several hit singles like the ubiquitous “HUMBLE.,” “DNA.,” and “LOYALTY.” featuring Rihanna. While the lyrics tackle heavy topics like struggling with inner demons, the infectious beats and melodies made the songs extremely popular and radio-friendly hits. Music videos for songs like “HUMBLE.” showcased Kendrick’s artistic vision and added new dimensions to the album’s narratives.

Awards & Prizes

Kendrick received numerous accolades and historic honors for DAMN. He won 2 Grammys including Best Rap Album and Best Rap Performance for “HUMBLE.” More notably, DAMN. received the prestigious Pulitzer Prize for Music in 2018 – the first non-classical or jazz work to ever receive that honor. Landmark Artistic Statement

Five years later, DAMN. is considered an all-time great hip hop album and bonafide modern classic. It continued Kendrick’s creative evolution from his breakout good kid, m.A.A.d city and reinforced him as the voice of a generation. Songs like the haunting “FEAR.” explore systemic racism, survivors’ guilt and generational trauma with profound vulnerability and self-reflection. The searing “XXX.” with U2 addresses America’s complicated relationship with violence and the marginalization of minorities. The satirical “HUMBLE.” took on celebrity arrogance and materialism. From front to back, the album grappled with what it means to be human in all its complexities.

Timeless Cultural Impact

The artistic vision, skill and cultural impact of DAMN. make it one of the most influential albums of the 2010s decade that will inspire generations of artists to come. It cemented Kendrick’s respected status as one of the most important voices in music today.

Spotify “Remix” Feature: Speed Up, Slow Down, or Mash-Up Spotify Songs

0

Spotify is reportedly developing new tools that would allow Premium subscribers to remix songs from their favorite artists by speeding them up, slowing them down, or mashing them together.

According to sources cited by The Wall Street Journal, the goal is to capitalize on the popular trend of fan-made song edits and remixes, which are frequently shared on social media platforms like TikTok.

The music streaming giant hopes that enabling this kind of user-generated content will deepen engagement with younger audiences and open up a new revenue stream for artists and labels.

Under the reported plans, basic remix tools like speed control would be available to all Premium subscribers, while more advanced remix capabilities may be part of a potential “Supremium” higher-tier subscription.

While fan remixes and edits of songs are already widely created and shared, the current landscape means artists don’t get paid for these unofficial manipulations.

Spotify’s remix tools would allow for an official, licensed way for this type of creative content to exist on the platform itself, with royalties paid to rights holders.

The trend of speeding up or slowing down songs has exploded in popularity on TikTok and other video-sharing apps. Data indicates that 38% of music content on TikTok in 2023 had its speed or pitch altered, up 25% from 2022.

Artists have taken notice, with some pre-emptively releasing “sped-up” versions of their songs to try to capitalize on the fandom.

However, Spotify’s plans are still in the early discussion phase, with no licensing deals in place yet with major record labels.

The ultimate goal would reportedly be to allow these official remixes and edits to live on Spotify itself, rather than being easily shareable outside the music service to platforms like TikTok.

If successful, Spotify’s remix tools could be a way to meet Gen Z listeners where their interests lie, while opening up a new revenue model for the streaming era. But key questions remain around pricing, platform openness, and whether artists will embrace handing over their music to be remixed en masse.

Why do many people hate EDM?

Electronic Dance Music (EDM), a genre known for its pulsating beats and infectious rhythms, has undeniably become a global phenomenon. However, it’s no stranger to controversy and criticism, leaving many wondering why some people harbor a dislike for this vibrant and energetic genre. Let’s explore some common reasons behind the disdain for EDM.

1. Lack of Lyrics

One prevalent complaint against EDM is its frequent absence of lyrics. Traditional music genres often rely on vocals to convey emotions and narratives. EDM, on the other hand, can be instrumental, focusing on the beats and rhythms rather than lyrical content. While some argue that this lack of lyrics is a flaw, it’s essential to recognize that EDM is crafted for the dance floor, where the music itself serves as the primary means of expression.

2. Unconventional Drops

The introduction of ‘drops’ in EDM, sudden breaks or shifts in rhythm, has raised eyebrows among music enthusiasts who perceive such interruptions as irregularities. However, these drops are integral to the genre, strategically placed to elevate the energy and excitement on the dance floor. When executed with precision, drops can be the defining element that propels a track to chart-topping success.

3. Emerging Talents

The youthfulness of many EDM artists, some as young as 16 or 19, has led to misconceptions about their lack of musical knowledge and experience. However, these artists possess a deep understanding of the intricacies of music production. Figures like Martin Garrix, the world’s no. 1 DJ, exemplify the talent and expertise present in the EDM community, challenging stereotypes about age and musical competence.

4. Cultural Fusion

EDM’s ability to fuse diverse cultures, sounds, and traditions is often overlooked. Artists like KSHMR, who incorporates Indian elements into his tracks, exemplify how EDM can serve as a platform for cultural expression. By bridging gaps between musical traditions, EDM fosters a global sense of unity and appreciation for diversity.

5. Volume and Intensity

Critics often label EDM as ‘too loud’ and ‘aggressive,’ but this perception stems from a misunderstanding of the genre’s purpose. Designed to make people move and enjoy themselves, EDM thrives on high-energy compositions that are best experienced at elevated volumes. The intensity serves a purpose – to immerse listeners in an atmosphere of euphoria and dance.

In conclusion, while EDM may not appeal to everyone’s taste, its criticisms often arise from a lack of understanding of the genre’s cultural significance, purpose, and the artistic prowess of its creators. As EDM continues to dominate the global music scene, it’s crucial to appreciate its unique attributes and the positive impact it has on bringing people together through the universal language of music.
