Sunbird Expands iMessage for Android, Introduces $1.99 Monthly Fee

Sunbird, the company behind the controversial iMessage for Android app, has announced plans to expand its service to more users. This expansion comes with a significant change – the introduction of a $1.99 monthly subscription fee.

According to a press release issued last week, Sunbird is set to invite the 171,000 users on its waitlist to start using the app in beta. These invitations are expected to roll out in phases beginning this month. The new beta version currently only supports iMessage, with plans to reintroduce RCS support via Google Messages in the future.

This move marks Sunbird’s attempt to rebuild its user base following a privacy scandal that forced the company to pull its app late last year. The app was reintroduced in April 2024 after addressing these concerns.

While the press release didn’t mention the new pricing structure, some users have reported receiving emails detailing the cost. According to these reports, Sunbird is offering a 7-day free trial, after which users will be charged $1.99 per month. This shift to a paid model represents a significant change for the previously free service.

The invitation emails also warn users about potential issues, including a “warming up period” for new Apple IDs, crashes when playing certain audio formats, and sporadic duplication of outgoing attachments.

Despite the announcement, there have been few confirmed reports of users actually gaining access to the new beta. This slow rollout may be part of Sunbird’s strategy to carefully manage the relaunch of its service.

As Sunbird attempts to carve out its niche in the messaging app market, it remains to be seen how users will respond to the new subscription model and whether the app can overcome its past privacy issues to become a viable option for Android users seeking iMessage compatibility.

Pocket FM Teams Up with ElevenLabs to Revolutionize Audio Content Creation

Pocket FM has announced a partnership with ElevenLabs to rapidly convert text scripts into audio content using artificial intelligence. This collaboration aims to revolutionize the process of creating audio series, making it faster and more cost-effective for content creators.

The partnership comes on the heels of Pocket FM’s successful $103 million Series D funding round in March. During its test phase, the company already produced 30,000 hours of audio content using ElevenLabs’ AI technology. With the full roll-out expected in the coming weeks, Pocket FM anticipates tripling its content library, which currently boasts over 100,000 hours of audio content.

The new tool integrates ElevenLabs’ technology, offering writers a selection of 50 voices for content conversion. Mati Staniszewski, co-founder of ElevenLabs, emphasized that their tool can understand the context of the writing and automatically infer emotions through the voice.

While the partnership promises increased efficiency and content volume, it also raises concerns about the quality of AI-generated content and its impact on human voice-over artists. India’s Association of Voiceover Artists (AVA) has expressed worry about the potential loss of livelihoods due to AI takeover in the industry.

Pocket FM asserts that engagement with AI-generated content in its experiments is “as good as human voice-over production.” However, the company, along with competitor Kuku FM, does not currently label content to indicate AI involvement in the creation process.

As the audio content landscape evolves with AI integration, the industry faces challenges in balancing technological advancements with maintaining content quality and addressing the concerns of human artists.

Kendrick Lamar Reignites Drake Feud With New Diss Verse

Kendrick Lamar Reignites Drake Feud With New Diss Verse

Kendrick Lamar took his ongoing feud with Drake to new heights on Wednesday night during his “Pop Out” concert in Los Angeles.

The rapper unveiled a new verse for his Drake diss track “Euphoria,” rapping “Give me Tupac’s ring back and I might give you a little respect.”

The line is a reference to Drake purchasing an estate ring once owned by the late Tupac Shakur at an auction last year. It’s the latest shot fired in the heated battle between the two hip-hop giants that erupted earlier this year.

The new “Euphoria” verse was part of Lamar’s explosive concert, which featured numerous guest appearances including Dr. Dre, Tyler, the Creator, Schoolboy Q and others. The show was live-streamed by Amazon Music as part of its “Forever the Influence” celebration for Black Music Month.

Lamar and Drake’s feud has escalated over recent months, with both trading diss tracks taking personal jabs at each other’s appearances, making accusations of impropriety, and claiming the other has secret children. While Drake seemed to call a truce with his track “The Heart Part 6,” Lamar’s new bar on “Euphoria” suggests the beef is far from over.

The concert’s fiery opener capped a major month for Kendrick that also saw his album “Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers” continue its streak atop the Billboard charts. With this fresh salvo, all eyes are now on if and how Drake will respond to reignite one of rap’s biggest feuds in years.

With its large 6.78-inch 120Hz display, 6GB of RAM, and a 5,010mAh battery, it is a strong contender in the budget segment. However, it also comes with some compromises, such as limited software support and inconsistent cameras.

  4. Expandable Storage: The phone has a microSD memory card slot, allowing users to expand storage up to 2TB.
  5. Decent Performance: The MediaTek Dimensity 6100 Plus processor and 6GB of memory provide decent performance for basic tasks.

Cons

  1. Limited Software Support: The TCL 50 XL 5G will only receive one major software update to Android 15 and two years of security update support.
  2. Inconsistent Cameras: The camera hardware is unimpressive, with photos lacking detail and exhibiting washed-out colors.
  3. Battery Life: The phone’s battery life is mediocre, draining quickly compared to similar phones.
  4. Carrier Locked: The TCL 50 XL 5G is currently exclusive to T-Mobile, limiting its availability to users on this carrier.

T-Mobile Restricts Bill Credits for Device Promotions

T-Mobile is set to implement a new policy that could frustrate many customers who take advantage of the carrier’s device promotions with bill credits.

T-Mobile will soon require devices receiving bill credit promotions to remain on installment plans for the full 24 months. According to internal documents, starting July 1st, customers who pay off their device installment plans early will forfeit any remaining unpaid bill credits.

Currently, T-Mobile allows customers to pay off devices early while continuing to receive the full promotional bill credits over 24 months. But the new policy ties the credits directly to keeping installment plans open, removing that flexibility.

The reasons behind the move are unclear, but preventing customers from leaving for other carriers after getting discounted devices could be a factor. T-Mobile’s acquisition of Mint Mobile subjected it to consumer-friendly unlocking policies that could enable such behavior when combined with early payoffs.

Customers with existing bill credit promotions prior to July 1st are unaffected. However, the change takes away a customer-friendly policy and could impact future buying decisions. It represents an anti-consumer move limiting customers’ freedom to pay off devices without penalty.

Priced at $79.99, the Beats Solo Buds boast an impressive 18-hour battery life, setting a new standard for endurance in the wireless earbuds category.

The Beats Solo Buds feature dual-layer transducers designed to minimize micro-distortions across the frequency curve, ensuring high-fidelity sound with clarity and detail. They also come with four ear tip sizes (XS, S, M, and L) and offer “passive noise isolation” to enhance audio quality. Additionally, the buds feature a custom Beats chip inside that enables one-touch pairing across both iOS and Android devices.

Although the Beats Solo Buds do not offer active noise cancellation, they rely on passive noise isolation to enhance audio quality. However, their advanced noise-learning algorithm and custom-designed microphone are expected to deliver exceptional call quality.

The Beats Solo Buds are set to hit the market in June, offering a significant step forward in the affordable wireless earbuds market. With their competitive pricing and impressive features, they represent a strong competitor to Apple’s AirPods.

The Beats Solo Buds are designed to cater to consumers seeking both convenience and performance without breaking the bank. They offer a reliable alternative to AirPods, providing a similar wireless earbuds experience at a lower price point.

Overall, the Beats Solo Buds are an exciting addition to the wireless earbuds market, offering a compelling alternative to Apple’s AirPods.

Barbarella Remake: Cast, Release Date & More

The long-awaited remake of the 1968 cult classic Barbarella is gaining momentum with Sydney Sweeney set to star in the title role. The film, which is still in development, is expected to bring a fresh perspective to the genre-bending story inspired by the French comic series by Jean-Claude Forest.

Edgar Wright, known for his deft blend of genres in films like Shaun of the Dead and Baby Driver, is reportedly in talks to direct the remake. Wright’s unique style and expertise make him an ideal candidate for the campy sci-fi movie. However, his busy schedule may pose a challenge if expediency is a priority.

The original Barbarella film, starring Jane Fonda, followed the titular space traveler on a mission to locate the rogue scientist Durand Durand and his destructive weapon. The plot, while simple in setup, provided a framing device for a series of wacky adventures in the original movie. The remake could explore the overt sexualization of its main character as a commentary on media representation, offering a thought-provoking take on the source material.

Sydney Sweeney, known for her roles in Euphoria and The White Lotus, is set to star as Barbarella and will also executive produce the film. The actress has expressed her enthusiasm for the character, stating that she is drawn to Barbarella’s use of sex as a tool and her embodiment of femininity and sexuality.

While details about the plot and release date are scarce, the involvement of a major star has generated considerable excitement. The potential for a star-studded ensemble, with other popular actors possibly joining the cast, adds to the anticipation. As more details emerge, fans can look forward to a fresh and engaging take on the classic sci-fi story

Netflix revealed more details today about its upcoming permanent ‘Netflix House’ retail destinations, including where the first two venues will open in 2025 – Dallas, Texas and King of Prussia, Pennsylvania.

The initial Netflix House locations will take over former department store sites in the popular Galleria Dallas and King of Prussia Mall shopping centers, providing over 100,000 square feet of space for each venue.

While light on specifics, Netflix says the destinations will feature “regularly updated immersive experiences” themed around its popular shows and films, as well as “unique food and drink offerings.” Outside, fans can expect “eye-popping sculptures and a mural mash-up of characters from their favorite Netflix titles.

“The move to open the first Netflix Houses in shopping malls seems a natural fit, as the third season of Stranger Things prominently featured the fictional Starcourt Mall. Though that mall set was closed to the public during filming, Netflix has found success with previous themed pop-up experiences.

“These will be a fantastic new entrainment destination for fans to dive into the amazing stories from our series and films in a new and hugely fun way,” said Marian Lee, Netflix’s Chief Marketing Officer.

Netflix is likely hoping the permanent attractions can help revitalize shopping malls struggling with vacant retail spaces left by defunct chains like Sears. If successful, the Netflix House venues could pave the way for similar retail experiences from other major streaming platforms.

In the still from the series, Claffey as the legendary Ser Duncan can be seen looming over a crowded street scene. While light on details, the image teases the gritty medieval world the show will depict, set roughly a century before the events of Game of Thrones during the Targaryen reign.

Claffey will be joined by young actor Dexter Sol Ansell, who will portray Ser Duncan’s diminutive squire “Egg” (the legendary Aegon V Targaryen) in this adaptation of George R.R. Martin’s Dunk and Egg novellas. Additional cast members announced include Finn Bennett as Aerion Targaryen, Bertie Carvel as Baelor Targaryen, Tanzyn Crawford as Tanselle, Daniel Ings as Ser Lyonel Baratheon, and Sam Spruell as Maekar Targaryen.

According to the official logline, the series will follow “a young, naïve but courageous knight, Ser Duncan the Tall, and his diminutive squire, Egg” as they wander Westeros “in an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne, and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living memory.”

Black Mirror veteran Owen Harris has been tapped to direct half of the six-episode first season, with the other half helmed by Sarah Adina Smith of Lessons In Chemistry. HBO has signaled A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms could run for around three seasons if all goes well.

Echoes of Wisdom: Nintendo Unveils Wildly New Zelda Game Starring Zelda

In a surprise announcement during Nintendo Direct showcase, the gaming giant unveiled a shocking new entry in the beloved Legend of Zelda series. Titled The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, this top-down adventure game will star Princess Zelda herself in the leading role on a quest to find the missing Link.

The gameplay showcased a radical departure from traditional 3D Zelda titles. Instead of sword combat, Zelda wields a magical wand that allows her to summon objects, monsters and more to solve puzzles and take on enemies in what appears to be a unique combat system inspired by Pokemon.

But perhaps the biggest shock was Nintendo’s announcement of a release date just over 3 months away on September 27, 2024 – positioning Echoes of Wisdom as a major holiday release for the aging Switch platform. While a top-down Zelda may seem like a scaled-back experience, the trailer showcased gorgeous art, inventive puzzle gameplay and epic monster battles. As a more modest technical experience, it also seems perfectly suited for playing in handheld Switch mode, evoking nostalgic memories of classic portable Zelda titles.

After decades of fans requesting a Zelda game that truly puts the iconic heroine in a leading role, Echoes of Wisdom seems to deliver in a big way, though with some wildly unexpected gameplay twists. This surprise unveiling was just one of many huge announcements in today’s Nintendo Direct, which also offered a first look at the long-awaited Metroid Prime 4, now slated to release in 2025.

Once again, Nintendo has pulled off some shocking reveals that double as ingenious curveballs, showing the company’s talent for constant innovation within its biggest franchises.

Apple Is Reportedly Working On An Affordable Vision Pro

Apple’s ambitious Vision Pro mixed reality headset only launched a few months ago, but the company is already changing course on its next steps in the headset market, according to a new report from The Information.

Rather than developing a new high-end successor to the $3,499 Vision Pro, Apple has reportedly redirected the Vision Pro team to work on building a more affordable headset aimed at a broader consumer market. Codenamed “N109”, this cheaper headset is targeted to cost around the price of a high-end iPhone, potentially in the $1,500 to $2,500 range.

The goal is to keep the Vision Pro’s marquee high-resolution displays while removing some extraneous features and making the device at least one-third lighter than the current 1.6 pound Vision Pro. However, the report indicates Apple is struggling to significantly reduce costs without compromising too many capabilities.

Apple had originally planned to ship this cheaper mixed reality headset by the end of 2025, but development challenges could push back that target date. The company may have been motivated to pivot to a lower price point amid disappointing sales for the expensive and niche Vision Pro.

Despite the refocused efforts on a mainstream device, Apple still plans to launch the Vision Pro internationally by late June and deliver a major software update with visionOS 2 this fall. But ambitions for a true “Pro” follow-up appear to have been shelved for now in favor of cracking the mass market.

While a more affordable headset could expand Apple’s footprint in spatial computing, it remains to be seen if the company can deliver a compelling experience at a lower price point. The Vision Pro’s high cost was driven by cutting-edge hardware like its precise eye-tracking system.

Apple may need to carefully weigh which capabilities to sacrifice in order to hit an acceptable consumer price tag without undermining the overall experience. Scaling accessibility is crucial for Apple’s passage from an emerging niche to the next major computing platform.

Cheaper & Better-looking Apple Vision Pro Alternative Unveiled

Chinese augmented reality company Rokid has announced its latest AR glasses offering, the Rokid AR Lite, positioning it as a potential rival to Apple’s upcoming Vision Pro headset. The AR Lite system comprises the Rokid Max 2 glasses and the Rokid Station 2 processing unit.

What sets the Rokid AR Lite apart is its form factor, which more closely resembles regular sunglasses or spectacles compared to bulkier AR/VR headsets. The Max 2 glasses weigh just 75 grams and feature Sony 0.68-inch MicroOLED displays offering a 1200p resolution per eye and a 50-degree field of view, equivalent to a 300-inch virtual screen.

The separate Rokid Station 2 unit houses the processing power, thanks to Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 Mobile Platform, making the AR Lite the first device powered by this chip. It packs 8GB RAM, 128GB storage, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.2, and a 5,000mAh battery to keep the glasses lightweight.

While less immersive than the Vision Pro’s mixed reality capabilities, the AR Lite’s sleeker design could make it more practical for everyday use scenarios like watching videos, viewing 3D content, and even gaming on a virtual screen.

Rokid is currently crowdfunding the AR Lite on Kickstarter, with an early bird price of $499 (approx. £393) for the full system. Regular pricing is set at $749, still undercutting the $3,499 Vision Pro. Shipping is slated for September 2024 if the campaign is successful.

As Apple prepares to bring premium mixed reality experiences to the masses, Rokid’s AR Lite offers a more affordable and lightweight alternative for those prioritizing practicality and portability in augmented reality glasses.

New Social Media App Replaces Humans with AI Characters

A new app called Butterflies is offering a provocative glimpse into a future where artificial intelligence dominates social media feeds. The Butterflies app lets users create AI “characters” that autonomously generate photos, captions, and comments to interact with other AI accounts as well as human users.

Developed by startup Butterflies AI and launched after a private beta, the app takes inspiration from traditional social networks like Instagram while putting machine learning front and center. When signing up, users create an AI persona or “Butterfly” that begins posting AI-generated content from the outset. The interactions between AI characters can feel bizarre, unnatural, and even unsettling at times.

However, the Butterflies team expects the quality and coherence of the AI characters to improve rapidly over time as they utilize more advanced language models. The long-term vision is to integrate immersive formats like video while adding famous figures and characters through licensing deals.

While still in its early stages, the Butterflies app represents a nascent socialmediaverse dominated by AI personas rather than real human users. This synthetic future aligns with Mark Zuckerberg’s plans for an “AI Studio” that will let anyone create and deploy AI characters across Meta’s platforms.

As AI capabilities advance, the line between real and virtual social media personalities could become increasingly blurred. For better or worse, Butterflies offers a glimpse of what that AI-driven experience might look like.

Threads API Launched, Opening Platform to Developers

Meta’s new social media platform Threads has officially launched an API (Application Programming Interface) for third-party developers. The move will allow developers to build new experiences and integrations around the rapidly growing platform.

In a blog post on Monday, Threads engineer Jesse Chen announced that the new API will enable developers to publish posts, fetch their own content, and deploy tools for managing replies including hiding, unhiding, and responding to specific comments.

The API will also provide access to analytics data like number of views, likes, replies, reposts, and quotes at the media and account level.

“The Threads API is now widely available and coming to more of you soon,” said Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg in a separate post celebrating the API launch.

Threads had first announced plans for the API in a limited beta last October with select partners like Sprinklr, Hootsuite, and Techmeme. The company delivered on its promise to open up the API more broadly by this month.

Along with the API launch, Meta has also released an open-source reference app on GitHub for developers to experiment with.

The launch gives third-party developers a major new social platform to build tools and apps around, after a year of platforms like Twitter (now X) and Reddit restricting access. Threads’ integration with the decentralized fediverse also provides opportunities.

With over 150 million users, Threads represents one of the biggest new social networks opening itself up to external developers in recent years through a public API. The move could unlock a wave of new integrations and innovations around the fledgling text-based conversation app.

Apple Pulls Plug on Pay Later, Embraces Third-Party Lenders

In a surprising move, Apple is discontinuing its Pay Later service less than a year after launching it in the United States. The Pay Later feature allowed Apple users to split purchases from $50 to $1,000 into four interest-free installments paid through Apple Wallet.

The service, introduced in 2022 in partnership with Mastercard and Goldman Sachs, will be replaced by a built-in capability in the upcoming iOS 18 operating system update. This new functionality will enable third-party buy now, pay later (BNPL) lenders, such as Affirm, to offer installment loans at checkout when customers use Apple Pay.

According to a statement from Apple, the change aims to “bring flexible payments to more users in more places across the globe, in collaboration with Apple Pay enabled banks and lenders.”

At Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June, the company announced that major lenders, including Citigroup, Synchrony Financial, and Apple Pay issuers using Finserv software, would be able to issue BNPL loans through Apple Pay in the United States.

While existing Pay Later loans can still be paid off and tracked in Apple Wallet, no new loans will be offered through the defunct service after the transition later this year when iOS 18 launches in September.

The move signals a strategic shift for Apple, leveraging the ubiquity of Apple Pay to facilitate third-party lending integrations rather than operating its own BNPL program. It remains to be seen how this change will impact the user experience and what terms and conditions BNPL lenders will offer through Apple’s platform.

Kanye West Dropped ‘YEEZUS’ 11 Years Ago

On June 18, 2013, Kanye West released his sixth studio album, ‘YEEZUS’, which marked a significant departure from his previous works. The album was met with both widespread acclaim and intense criticism, cementing its status as a polarizing masterpiece.

‘YEEZUS’ debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, selling 327,000 copies in its first week. The album went on to become certified platinum by January 2014. The lead singles “Black Skinhead” and “Bound 2” received significant attention, with the former’s music video featuring Kanye’s then-fiancée Kim Kardashian.

The album’s unorthodox and deliberate lack of promotion, as well as its brash and aggressive sound, generated mixed reactions. Critics praised the album’s innovative production and West’s bold experimentation, but others found the lyrics and delivery off-putting. Despite this, ‘YEEZUS’ was widely acclaimed by music critics, with many publications ranking it number one on their lists of best albums of the year.

In the years since its release, ‘YEEZUS’ has continued to be a subject of debate. Some view it as a groundbreaking work that pushed the boundaries of hip-hop, while others see it as a self-indulgent and arrogant attempt to redefine the genre.

Regardless, ‘YEEZUS’ remains a testament to Kanye West’s unwavering commitment to his artistic vision and his ability to inspire both admiration and controversy.
