New Rumor Suggests Release Date for 3D Mario Game on Switch 2

Nintendo fans may have to wait a little longer for the next 3D Mario game, but a new rumor has surfaced that could give some clues about when it will finally arrive.

The last new 3D Mario game, Super Mario Odyssey, was released in 2017, marking an eight-year gap between mainline 3D Mario titles. This is much longer than previous waits, as the longest gap between 3D Mario releases before this was six years.

Despite the long wait, fans are hopeful that the new 3D Mario game will arrive this year. While Nintendo has not officially confirmed a new 3D Mario title for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, rumors suggest it is in development.

However, according to the latest rumor, the game will not be available at the launch of the Switch 2, which is expected to be on March 3, 2025. Instead, it will likely release after the console’s debut.

In 2017, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was the big launch title for the Nintendo Switch. This time, the rumored launch game for the Switch 2 is Mario Kart 9.

This leaves the new 3D Mario game with two possible release windows: one in October, just as Super Mario Odyssey was released for the original Switch in 2017, or potentially during the holiday season.

Another possibility is that Nintendo could release the new 3D Mario game in the spring of 2025, similar to how Mario Kart 8 Deluxe launched a month after the original Switch’s release.

With Mario Kart 9 set for the Switch 2’s launch, this could leave the new 3D Mario game to take the spotlight later in the year.

For now, all of this remains speculation, and there has been no official confirmation from Nintendo. Fans should take the rumors with caution, but it’s clear that Nintendo is working on a big 3D Mario title for the next console.
