Meta’s Experiment with AI Characters on Social Media Ends in Controversy

Meta’s recent experiment with AI-generated characters for Facebook and Instagram has sparked outrage.

The tech giant revealed plans for AI profiles to populate their platforms, mimicking real accounts with bios, profile pictures, and AI-generated content.

However, an earlier test run of these characters has been met with ridicule and concern.

One of the most criticized figures was “Liv,” an AI character described as a “proud Black queer momma of 2 & truth-teller.”

Liv’s posts, featuring unnerving AI-generated children with distorted features, raised alarm.

Additionally, the bot’s responses to questions about its creation and purpose were awkward and unsettling, with claims about its racial profiling and data collection motives.

Meta swiftly deleted these experimental accounts, citing a bug that affected blocking features.

Despite the controversy, the company remains committed to integrating AI-driven content into its platforms, leaving many worried about the future of social media.
